Wonkette's breezy deep thinks
Wonkette is ostensibly a DC blog, but it’s really on the vanguard of new MSM (Main Stream Media) blogs. It’s ranked 22 on Technorati’s Top 100. Rankings are based on the number of sources linked to each blog. It has more than 5,200 links. Top rated BoingBoing has more than 20,000 links.Wonkette is edgy, intelligent, and as visually stunning as the magazine Vanity Fair -- evidence of a creative, talented crew at work. It’s part of Gawker Media, which publishes Gawker, Gizmodo, Fleshbot, Defamer, among others.
The Wonkette team lists more than 10 people. The site is filled with display ads and the advertising rates probably cause blogger envy.
Wonkette is focused on big picture political and cultural issues. DC isn’t neglected, and that’s why it’s included on DCBlogs. Check out, for instance, it’s DC politics link, a catalog of recent DC-centric posts.
Wonkette isn’t perfect. It’s a little over the top in promoting itself; the homepage column of review excerpts is gratuitous. Some are nearly a year old. There are three places on the homepage that point out that you can advertise on Wonkette.
Wonkette can tone the language down. On the day I looked, words like "ass" and our favorite “f” word were sprinkled on the copy like salt. It undercuts Wonkett’s major strength: its provoking satire, humor and skepticism. The “very threatening” terrorist scenarios on the funny pictures page are a hoot.
Wonkette is a cross between New Republic and People Magazine, breezy deep thinks. While technically a blog, Wonkette is part of a growing Web publishing empire built on blog-like concepts and moving into a world of its own.
