DC Blogs Noted: Blog chills

Preparing for the Avian Flu
Fluwiki
The news about the spread of the so-called bird or avian flu has all the characteristics of a slowly unraveling medical thriller. Mysterious bird deaths are being reported from Southern Asia to Siberia, as well as human fatalities, and there are growing fears of a global pandemic. This Sunday’s
Washington Post warned of a lack of preparedness. Foreign Affairs has some outstanding reports in a recent issue. One city blogger, Melanie Mattson, is working with some medical doctors to develop the Fluwiki. In a note she explained her effort this way:

People have no idea that this is lurking and, if it hits, are going to be completely unprepared because the government has done nothing to prepare. My two partners in this venture are both MDs, one an epidemiologist, the other a pediatric pulmonologist, and we've already gotten a fair amount of international press attention.

A new neighborhood blog
Living in Virginia -- Clarendon
Here’s a neighborhood blog focused on Clarendon, just three Metro stops from Foggy Bottom. Its author is a “44 year-old middle-aged married guy who enjoys life.” It’s a mix of things, some personal, some newsy -- such as a report regarding the redevelopment of the Clarendon post office. Another entry concerns our writer’s experience at Mr. Wash. It’s a friendly, inviting blog, and the effort is described this way: This is a scrapbook about living in the Clarendon neighborhood of northern Virginia. It may include: reviews of local fun things to do, local observation, friends and acquaintances, personal finance, cooking and food, book & movie reviews or anything else.

Metro search anxiety
Desperate in DC
What happens if Metro police require people to open their bags? There is reason for concern, as this blog writer points out.

I am slightly concerned about possible random bag searches on the metro here. Hubby occasionally visits a shop near Dupont Circle for special "for our eyes only" gifts for me. Wonder how the metro police might view something he claims is only a "rabbit" but is hot pink and vaguely resembles a fat sword. Would proudly proclaim it my own if stopped, but am afraid hubby may be a bit too squeamish for this sort of thing. May take to fighting the terrorists in the streets myself if they start interfering with my sex life. After all, this girl just wants to have fun.

Not all glass is beautiful, but you are beautiful.
A circle has too much symmetry
This blog is written by "the queen of the geeks," a name this writer says she did not choose for herself. This particular post includes a long list of "things I love (and would not change) about a great man in my life" including, "You introduced me to blogs." Lucky guy. It starts this way:

There are many men that come and go in your life. There are the ones that you will hate until your last breath, but whose influence is always there in your life...

Flirting or Being Friendly?
DC Gays of Our Lives
New blog, clever name and well written.

How does one know when the line between being friendly and flirting has been crossed? (sorry for using the passive tense) Granted, I doubt she knows I'm gay, but it is possible, so I could've been hesitant for nothing. Then again, it's really awkward to when a girl presents interest and I have to inform her that I'm gay. I've never had any problems with this, but it's best avoided.

Also noted:

Three strikes for Adams Morgan by anacoluthia. “Perhaps it’s time to reexamine where I spend by evenings.” Read for details.

Some Great Reward
has turned 30 and reflects on the “accomplishments made in my 20’s.” It’s a long list that includes “Had 4 almost marriage proposals,” and “two blogs.”

DC Life reports that
my mom got a tattoo.

White House surrounded by Pentagram by a blogger named
tHink. Fun with Google maps and DC streets. We don’t know where the writer is based.
